Born in Athens-Greece in 1976, Alexis Georgacopoulos lives and works in Lausanne. Since July 2011, he is the Director of ECAL- Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne University of Art and Design Lausanne, pursuing the quest for innovation, creativity and quality education in the fields of art and design.
He received his Bachelor degree in Product Design from the ECAL-Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne in 1999 and has combined design teaching and practice ever since.
From September 2000 until December 2008 he was the head of the Bachelor programme in industrial design at ECAL. During this period, the industrial design Department of the ECAL became one of the most acclaimed and influential in design education worldwide. He initiated the participation of the department in important international fairs like the Milan Furniture Fair and set up international exhibitions.
In 2006, he received the prestigious Leenaards Foundation Cultural Grant and in early 2008 he spent 4 months in Hong Kong exploring this flourishing south-east Asia area.
From 2009 to 2012 he headed the Master studies in industrial design at the ECAL, contributing into placing this new programme into the international scene.
He believes that knowledge in Art and Design must be achieved notably through close links between education and practice and is constantly on the outlook for new exciting opportunities for the school and it’s students.
